Getting around Australia
Introduction
Australia is huge - the country is the same size as Europe but the good news is that public transport is great. Most Australians have a car but when moving from city to city then flying is really the only alternative. Driving in Australia is also a breeze but remember to obey the rules of the road!Learning the area
A good idea is to familiarize yourself with your area that you are staying in, go for long walks around the neighbourhood.
There are great paths and you won’t get run over by heavy traffic. It is safe to walk around alone in most areas - remember that the police services are excellent and the crime rate is very low. Always keep the phone number of the hotel or house that you are staying at in your pocket. Get hold of a map of your area, you can buy these at any stationery store and then keep it with you all the time as most people assume you know the area and will say take "take this road to Berties Bar, turn left onto the Bruce's highway...." which means nothing to someone who doesn't know where the bar is or who is Bruce!Public Transport
Whether you use the bus, train or tram, the transport system is excellent. However, when you look at the cost of the transport it can be a bit of a fright to begin with if you convert it back into Rands. If you are going to use public transport a lot, get yourself a season ticket as this works out the cheapest.
Trains: Trains are clean and run on time. The train system around Perth is particularly good except for some of the interesting characters that use them. After 7pm however there is an excellent police presence to ensure your journey is a safe one.
Buses and trams: These are reliable and cheap (AU$1.50 - $3.00 per trip). In the city centers some of these services are free (Called CATS transport). Also there are excellent inter-city bus services at reasonable rates.
Taxis: Every area has a local taxi company. Get a card or number and carry it around with you. You can call them at any time and they will come and pick you up - especially if you have been drinking.
Flying: Because of the size of Australia be prepared to fly. The airline industry has had its problems but on a whole the prices are reasonable and the flights are usually on time.
Driving
In Australia they drive on the left, just like us back home, so you will not have a problem adjusting. The roads are also excellent - except when venturing into the outback! The rule of the road in Australia is Never Speed, Never Drink and Drive and Obey The Rules of the road at all times!
Before you arrive make sure that you have got an international drivers license from the AA.
